Special Edition, Oil Spill Update
Recently, I was interviewed by Erica Christoffer of the National Association of REALTORS, Realtor Magazine. Here is the link to a series of articles on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
We have been blessed with clean waters here in Boca Grande. The Gulf is calm and crystal clear, as I sit at my laptop watching it as I type. I realize looking out at the water that the environmental impact might be felt for years, and I am thankful that we have yet to experience any oil first hand. What I have noticed is an increase in sightings of our larger pelagic wildlife. These critters (whale sharks, dorado / mahi mahi, and sailfish) are not our usual local swimmers. Most of them stay far, far off of the coast here in deeper water. Occasionally we spot a whale that has come in to take advantage of the rich food supply from the estuary, but it is not typical. Mote Marine has been tagging them to see if they can conclude why they are visiting us, and it could be that they are foraging this far in due to the northern Gulf spill.
I remain optimistic that nature will cleanse our precious Gulf. The important thing is to note that there is no oil here now, and there has not been any oil here. Since my interview, our rental department has only had one other vacation rental cancellation siting oil as their reason. Our company is offering a full refund to vacationers, should our waters and beaches be declared as unsafe. No such threat has occurred yet.
To date in 2010, Gasparilla Island residential sales have surpassed 2009 sales by about 150%. I expect sales to continue through the end of the year and predict that residential sales will double over last year's totals. Although still a buyer's market, properties are properly priced and some great opportunities exist out here.
