Ok, normally I reserve this blog for real estate news and updates for the Boca Grande and Gasparilla Island geographical area. Today, I have reason to blog about something entirely different. If you are someone that plans to have your own website someday, you should read this.
A company called Tucows (http://www.tucowsinc.com/) is a reseller of domain names. They are the WORST company I have EVER dealt with. A familiar company, Advanced Access, who builds real estate sites, is to blame for using Tucows to host the sites they build. I advise you to run straight to GoDaddy for your domains and hosting needs. DT Hosting is also a good company. Buy the domain, then get your website setup. While GoDaddy (http://www.godaddy.com/default.aspx) is a large-scale company and DT (http://dthosting.com/) is a small one, both provide LIVE support.
I have spent 2 days on the phone trying to get a live person at Tucows. Finally reaching something with a pulse, I am told to contact someone else. After 20 minutes on hold, they first ask me *again* why I am calling, and then tell me I should call Tucows directly... which is where I just called. A pattern began to emerge. After 6 calls, I am no better off than in the very beginning. I think it would be easier to just buy a new domain name and start my marketing all over again! Dizzying idiots run the Tucows company. They have no idea what customer service is. If anyone else has had to work with them, I pity you.
On the other hand, GoDaddy customer support actually tried to help me even before I gave them any money! They sent support e-mails and tried to walk me through the competitors site. Now THAT's service. You don't have to take my word for it, this is just an experience I am sharing so that hopefully I help at least one person avoid an internet pitfall. Best of luck to you, and happy surfing.
