Hurricane Shutters

Please be aware that one year from the date your current 2009 policy renews (and no later than July 1st, 2010), there will be new stipulations for wind-only (hurricane) polices issued through Citizens Property Insurance. Most island residents have their wind policies through Citizens.

Existing policy-holders: If your home is insured for over $750,000, you must have storm shutters installed on every window and opening by the July 1st deadline or your policy will be cancelled.

New island buyers: These shutters are required for binding a new policy. This means that all new owners will have to have rated hurricane shutters installed BEFORE they can attain a wind insurance policy (and therefore before closing on a new property if a mortgage is involved). Let me help you to use this information to save thousands of dollars during the negotiation of your purchase.

I advise any island homeowner or potential homeowner to discuss insurance with a qualified agent. Many factors are involved with properly insuring your property. There are two local island insurers on Gasparilla: Italiano Insurance (941-964-0400) and Key Agency (941-964-1500).

For an estimate on upgrading your existing shutters or options for installing new shutters, call David Borza and Trenton Marquette with Advanced Armor Hurricane Protection, LLC at 941-525-4025. Estimates are free, references are available, and they claim to beat the competition in quality and pricing.

  1. UPDATE:
The policies renewing before July 1st, 2009, have one year from the renewal date. Policies renewing after July 1st have to have them installed before their renewal. (ie: Policy renews on July 4th, and insured for over $750K - Need to be in the process of having the shutters on by now)
Thank you, Mandy (Italiano Insurance 964-0400)
